A college dean said to take classes that interested me. He thought I would be more likely to attend class, pay attention, and get good grades. He was right and I’ve applied his advice to every endeavor since. My resume is varied with experience, but I have always followed my interests, given 100%, and succeeded. As it turned out, my History degree required a lot of research and writing - the foundation of effective communication.

Although my career has not been linear, I've had some unique job opportunities and life experiences that I'd never regret (see resume for time spent in the music industry). I've worked at traditional PR & Marketing firms as well as internet start-ups; on the West Coast, the East Coast, and in between. I loved agency work where I'd juggle different accounts in unrelated businesses as well as the out-of-box thinking and flexibility required at an evolving start-up. What interested me about these jobs were the opportunities for learning and personal growth. The common denominator was writing: press releases, marketing campaigns, print materials, and ad copy.

Now more than ever, writing is the cornerstone of communication: web content, social media, and newsletters. As a freelancer, I am able to continue to learn. Market research is the first step with a new client so that I can either develop their brand or know enough about their industry to seamlessly write in their established voice. And while writing is often solitary, a successful campaign begins with collaboration.
